Rescue Organisation Ireland National Extrication Challenge 2011 was held in Dundalk Fire station on March 18th 2011. The event saw 18 teams take part in the event which included for the first time a Trauma Challenge.
The EXTRICATION challenges involve the simulated rescue of a trapped casualty from a severely damaged vehicle within a 20 minute ('Standard') and a 10 minute ('Rapid') timeframe. This vehicle contains a live casualty and other vehicles and/or staging props are used to act as obstacles. As in a real incident the 5-firefighter teams use specialist tools and hydraulic equipment to rescue the casualty. Each team is then marked by a panel of 3 ROI assessors.
The TRAUMA challenge involves the simulation of a trauma incident and the treatment of a casualty within a 10 minute timeframe before the arrival of the ambulance service. The challenge allows a 2-firefighter team to deal with a live casualty suffering from a severe trauma and this is then assessed by a panel of 2 ROI assessors.
The top 3 ranked teams will be facilitated to attend the World Rescue Challenge 2011 to be held in New Zealand, the Spanish National Challenge 2011 & the Scottish National Challenge 2011 respectively.
